People and departments: the directory
How the OrgBearings directory works — nested departments, remits, relationship types, quick capture and instant search.
People and departments
The directory is the front door of OrgBearings — the part you can build entirely on the Free plan and keep editable forever, whatever happens to your subscription.
Departments
Departments nest into a tree. Each one carries two fields that make it useful rather than decorative:
- Remit — what this department actually controls or approves, in plain English
- SLA notes — the unwritten rules, e.g. "requires 5 working days' notice" or "only reviews changes on Tuesdays"
People
Every person on your map carries:
- Full name, job title and optional email
- Actual remit — what they really do. The most valuable field in the product
- Relationship — your primary relationship to them:
direct_teammate,stakeholder,approver,sme_unblockerorexternal_vendor - Communication preference — "Teams first, hates unscheduled calls"
- Timezone — their working timezone, so their availability is always judged locally
Quick capture
Press N (or the New Person button) to add someone in under 15 seconds. The sheet is built for live capture during meetings — name, department, remit, done. Enrich later.
Search
The command bar (Cmd+K or /) searches people, departments, projects and blockers at once. "Who does firewalls?" is a literal question you can ask.
Your data
Everything on the map belongs to your workspace alone. Export it (JSON or CSV) or purge it entirely from workspace settings at any time — see plans and billing for what each tier includes.
